Stroke diagnostics
Read the evidence left by the nib.
These exercises treat a practice line like a small diagnostic problem: identify the symptom, isolate the likely cause, test one correction.
Diagnostic 01: pressure timing
If a downstroke becomes heavy immediately, the issue may be pressure arriving before direction is stable. If it stays thin too long, pressure may be delayed. Compare the examples, then test three deliberately different timings.
- Mark the widest third of each stroke
- Check whether both tines open evenly
- Release before the turn
- Repeat without changing ink or paper

Diagnostic 02: spacing rhythm
Instead of asking whether individual letters are “pretty,” compare the white intervals. Uneven spacing often becomes easier to see when the black strokes are treated as boundaries around repeated counters.
Diagnostic 03: self-review
Use a five-point review after a short line. Do not correct everything at once: choose the single variable that repeats most consistently, then rewrite.
